Three Mood Boards for 2021

Now that we’ve broken down the step-by-step formula we use to make a Mood Board in Part 1 of this series, we thought we’d dish out three sample boards we’ve created, each following the formula and each reflecting a few of the styles we feel are relevant in 2021. Feel free to use them as your own!

Board 1 - Contemporary Australian

2020 saw us nesting (some may call it quarantining) in our own sanctuaries where safety and comfort are top of mind. After a hellish year of bushfire destruction, floods, isolation from each other and the world… our country and how we live in it (and how we won’t be leaving it any time soon) has been a hot topic of conversation. In interiors, we’re responding by embracing warmer, comforting hues, natural, inviting textures and simple, beautiful forms that reference the Aussie landscape and natural resources.

Board 2 - New Hamptons

This look isn’t going away, especially in our local area on Sydney’s Northern Beaches! Of course, what we call Hamptons in Australia is generally quite different to the purist version of the style from the East coast of the US. It’s our own contemporary, pared-back interpretation, which suits our laid-back lifestyle and climate to a T, while still referencing the classic beauty and detailing of a shingle-clad beach house in Montauk.

Board 3 - Urban Minimalist

Organic forms, block colours, clean lines, metallics… the modernist game is strong in interiors right now! In 2021 it’s about an elegant simplicity where minimalism and comfort go hand in hand. Curves and arches will be around for a long while yet, informing some exciting shapes and looks in the furniture and lighting departments. The mood we’re setting here is sophisticated in attitude and fuss-free in personality. And there’s a little bit of a nod to a metropolis or two beyond our shores - we may not be able to visit New York or Milan right now, but we can still be inspired!
